Meet Balance Gym’s New Physical Therapist Lauren Polivka!

January 13th, 2010 · 1 Comment

Greetings and Happy New Year!

I am very excited to participate in the Balance newsletter and join this premier team. Starting this month, I’m heading physical therapyBalance Gym's New Physical Therapist Lauren Polivka services out of both Balance Gym locations and SomaFit.

Not only can you stop in one of our locations for group classes, gym memberships, personal training, Pilates training, CrossFit, Pole Pressure, massage therapy and spa services, but now you don’t have to call the doctor or to ask about that “pinching pain I had today when doing an overhead press” or “muscle spasm in my back during spinning”. You can walk in my office and we will take a look immediately. If I don’t know the answer, then I will send you to a physician. If I do, then I will make sure your instructor, trainer or massage therapist knows what specific aspect you might need to work on so it doesn’t happen again. I also get to help you find the right classes, trainers, and instructors for you. It’s an all around package deal and I am excited to make it part of our DC community.

So you might be wondering a bit about me. I have wanted to be a physical therapist my entire life. I went to University of Florida from my hometown of Rockford, Ill. to pursue a degree in exercise and sports sciences. Following undergrad, I traveled to Phoenix, Ariz. to intern in sports performance training at Athletes’ Performance. I graduated from Northwestern University with a doctorate in physical therapy. I have practiced in DC and also in California since graduation. Currently, you can find me at  both Balance locations, SomaFit and teaching a class at George Washington University in their doctoral physical therapy program.

My areas of specialization include: managing post-operative orthopedic injuries, manual based treatment techniques (joint mobilizations and soft tissue release), Pilates-based rehabilitation techniques, bridging the gap between physical therapy and sport and acute injuries of the shoulder, spine, hip and knee. I have treated members of the NBA, MLS, MLB, NHL, NFL, US Men’s Soccer, LPGA, and a variety of collegiate and high school athletes.

My philosophy of evaluating and treating patients takes a holistic approach to the human body. Whether you are an elite athlete, weekend warrior or a working professional, my goal is to ensure that your quality of life and play are better than before your injury. I am dedicated to bridging the gap between rehabilitation and fitness training. This means continuous communication and teamwork with your trainers, instructors and any other individual you deem important on your road to recovery.

I will be providing free 20-minute functional movement assessments to all new members and  leading an educational lecture series. Stay posted for dates and details!

If you have any questions please email me at: lauren@balancegym.com.
Lets get rid of pain and injury before it happens!
