Balance Gym in Washington DC is home to several experienced Pilates instructors who offer both one-on-one and semi-private Pilates reformer training sessions and group mat classes.

Developed by Josef Pilates in the early 20th century as a training technique, Pilates teaches — people of all ages — flexibility, body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movements. Through his extensive work developing a system of exercises to improve the rehabilitation program for veterans during the first World War, Pilates developed his unique approach to conditioning the entire body.

Pilates focuses on the body’s core muscles, which help maintain balance and support throughout the spine and extremities. It also focuses on several main principles:
